The story...
The reason for the name, "Seeing Cardinals."
To me, the cardinal has been a symbol and sign of God's love for nearly 10 years.
I'd love to share more about it if you meet me for coffee. :)
At just the moment I need to be reminded of that love, I'll see a cardinal. From the flash of red as a cardinal flies in front of us while driving, to the beautiful painting my cousin Dusty did that hangs in my living room, to a sticker on a scale at the pediatrician's office. Little red reminders of His love are everywhere. That's the purpose of this blog. To remind myself, and to remind you, to look for the cardinals.
About becoming a Buckner.
Marcus and I met on eHarmony in February 2010. I was a senior at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and he was living in Rosenberg working at Apple and helping a startup church with media. I joined as part of a free communication weekend. We messaged through eHarmony, and then through Facebook. Some of our first emails were about how we were raised, our walk with the Lord, our interests and life goals, and how we had reached our personal convictions.
When Marcus asked for my phone number, I gave it to him. Seconds later, my cell phone was ringing! We still laugh at that. It was the start of many phone and Skype talks. That very first phone conversation he asked me theological questions one right after the other. It was a little like an interview, but I was attracted to his directness and desire to see if our priorities lined up.
Our long distance relationship continued with late night Skype calls. After one of them, I walked gleefully into my apartment living room telling my roommate Stacy I knew I was going to marry this guy. I'm pretty sure she said my name with a look of disbelief... "Kennan!" while laughing at me. But I was right. :)
Marcus and I met in person for the first time in March. I was home for spring break. He made the drive to my hometown ready to meet my entire extended family. That weekend, he stayed at my grandparents' house! We spent the day exploring the sites at the San Antonio Riverwalk, taking pictures, and talking. I'm still proud to say that we might be one of the few couples in the whole world who has a photo of the day they met. :)

Two weeks after graduation in May, I got a job in Houston and made the move (found a place to live on Craigslist. Yep.) On June 19 he proposed at the San Antonio Riverwalk! We had driven to Belton that weekend to see my friends Beth and Dallas get married. We planned to drive down to visit my family after the wedding. What I didn't know was that Marcus had secretly driven to Devine earlier in the week to talk to my dad to ask his permission. So sweet. We got married on October 16 at my home church where we shared our first kiss* in front of our family and friends. *I promise to write a followup post about that. :)
What life looks like now. Marcus and I have been married five years. He's my best friend. He's also the reason I started a new blog. He's always encouraging me to do what I enjoy and to see the big picture. To see the cardinals in everyday life. In 2015 when I had our son Jaxson, I quit my dream magazine job for a new dream - being a mom! Now during blessed nap times, I freelance write and edit...and catch up on chores. NEW to the BLOG!
