I became a dog mom in 2011 when Marcus finally gave in to my protests that the apartment pet deposit would be worth it. I'm so glad he gave in. And I'm so glad I let him pick the dog. We got her from CAPS; so if you're local to the Houston area, go adopt. In 2015 when Jaxson joined the fam we realized several of the ways they're alike. Some are pretty comical. Obviously, I know that human kids are way better. But still, being dog parents taught us mini-lessons that prepared us in many ways to parenting a human child. 1. They're both afraid of the vacuum and blender. So special arrangements are made. Dad takes the kids outside so mom can clean without any barking or crying. 2. They both go for the pile of crumbs, dirt, and dust when I'm sweeping. It never fails, if I've got a pretty good pile ready to put in the dust pan - either the dog's walked through it or the baby's crawled through it. They're fast. 3. They both cost me a little extra money at the grocery store, but they are so easy to spend for. Those little bones she'll devour in minutes, or those cute bath toys he will love for $3. I'm a sucker. 4. They both need baths. The week goes by so fast measured in baths. Too bad for Reba she gets less of them now that we've got a human to bathe.
5. They both like being outdoors. Trees swaying in the wind, birds flying by, the entertainment outdoors is endless. 6. They both take a team to raise. I don't know how I'd do it without Marcus. 7. They both make traveling harder, but not impossible. We'll take extra toys and treats to keep them entertained on the road or make arrangements for Reba to go to "grandma camp" so we can get out of town dog-free. 8. The both like going for walks. Touch the leash or the stroller and they both seem to know what's coming. 9. They both dig in my recycle bins. I don't know why plastic bottles are so fun. 10. They always seem to want whatever I'm eating. Reba will usually scarf it down, whatever it is. J, on the other hand, is like "What is that?" 11. They follow you into any room. Especially the bathroom. I used to hear the pitter-patter of dog paws on the hard floor, now it's that PLUS tiny crawling hands and feet. Three's a crowd. 12. They fart, toot, pass gas - whatever you call it - and act like they don't know who did it. Or maybe they're so oblivious, they don't even know they laid a stink bomb. 13. Both want in the shower after I get out ... to splash in the water (or in Reba's case, drink it). 14. They take up my Insta-feed. Whoever put a phone in my hand that could take pictures (Verizon? Marcus?) didn't know I'd be complaining, "My phone says it's out of space again!" every other day. It's not as bad as it probably could be. I post about 1 in 10 of the photos of J that I take. 15. They both like the tennis ball. Genius. Except when they're both in the house. Then it's a fight. So J can play when Reba's outside, and Reba can play when he's in bed. 16. They put everything in their mouths. I try not to worry about it too much. 17. They both say "woof" when they hear (other) dogs bark. It's darn cute from one and annoying from the other. 18. Sometimes you have to clean up. We crate trained Reba so those days are gone, but I'd say the yuck of her occasional accident or barf prepared me a little for diaper duty. 19. Both rush to the door when Marcus leaves for work, or greet him when they hear the turn of the knob when he gets home. 20. "Do not bite" has been said to both. J now has three teeth. Ouch. It's all worth it. They pay you back with unconditional love. Do you have fur-kids and human kids? How are they alike?
