I did something crazy last December. After a hormonal, pregnant lady fit of woes that ended with bawling my eyes out in the shower... I had my husband remove all social media apps (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn) from my phone. And block their URLs from my phone's web browser. It's been an amazing month, and I have no plan to go back. Why? I finally admitted defeat. My struggle with practicing presence was a losing battle. I'd tried limiting my constant need to fill a spare second with checking my page, waking up first thing to check my phone, or mindlessly scrolling "while" nursing the baby, making dinner, waiting in line, having a conversation, or watching my son play... But the truth is, just as in motherhood, there is no such thing as multitasking when it comes to practicing presence. We can only give it away to one place, one space at a time. To some this may not seem like a drastic change in lifestyle. To others it may seem like something you could easily do too. That is... if you actually wanted to. That's what our newest tee Chin Up Phone Down means to me. It means that the people right in front of me matter more than the beep of the notification that just came in. That it is OK to just be. To sit on the back porch without phone in hand, so I don't miss the glimpse of the bright orange monarch butterfly that just landed on our recently sad, frozen ficus tree. To end the routine never-ending comparison game and take control with a little self-control. To quote a thought from Jen Hatmaker's book 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess to "be with those who are here." So have I given up social media? No. I love connecting with family and friends and helping promote our new brand Promise & Oath. It's an amazing tool to stay in touch, meet new people, and stay informed. But I've given it the boundary of our desktop computer. So when I'm replying to your post with your prayer request, or I'm sending you an encouraging quick message - you'll know I am all-in. You will have my full thought and attention. So keep your chin up, and put that phone down. Who are you with right now? Where is your presence needed? Your all-in friend, Kennan
